Reverse engineering medical implants from DICOM data
At AXIA we offer our engineering tools and knowledge to the medical industry, to help improve the quality and cost of surgical processes focusing on a better result for the patient.
The first stage is for us to understand the end result, what it is the surgical team is trying to achieve and what problems they encounter with traditional methods.
It's also important for the surgical teams to understand the tools we have available and our capabilities as more often then not they can also see benefit in other areas of the procedure which otherwise may not be explored.
For anatomical implants or simply for surgical assistive models or bio models it is imperative for us to begin our designs from accurate data. At AXIA we have invested in software that allows us to convert medical DICOM data from CT or MRI scans into 3D CAD formats that all of our design and additive manufacturing processes are driven from.
From the converted DICOM data we can start working our magic. The scan data provides us with the existing bone structures from which to begin creating our implants.
Other design aspects we can explore include pre surgical planning, cutting jigs, drilling stents and the tools to do the job.
The geometrical nature of implants creates a very challenging component to manufacture. The development of additve manufacturing technology has helped to solve some of the manufacturing challenges allowing us to manufacture custom implants from materials like Titanium and Cobalt Chromium very cost effectively and more importantly quickly.
